Re: Mechanisms Theme Discussion

Posted by Oliver Soong at February 22. 2007

I'm a first year Ph.D. student at the University of California Santa Barbara. Broadly, I am interested in how ecosystems function, how these functions produce human-derived services, and how to represent these ecosystem processes in mechanistic and ultimately predictive models over broad scales.

Currently, I am studying the initial dynamics and recovery of vegetation on a recently restored reach of the Merced River in California's Central Valley.  I'm interested in the mechanisms of BDEF because I want to better understand the relative importance of presence, diversity, composition, and abundance on the redevelopment and re-emergence of ecosystem function as well as the subsequent system dynamics.

Hello everyone, hola a todos. Valentin Picasso, from Uruguay, South America. Now finishing my PhD in Sustianable Agriculture at Iowa State. My research focus is the role of species and functional diversity in biomass production and other ecosystem processes in perennial herbaceous plant communities. I ama fellow of The LAnd Insitute (www.landinstitute.org) and very interested in imitating natural ecosystems to design sustainable agriculture systems. My webpage is http://www.public.iastate.edu/~vpicasso/homepage.html. Looking forward to chat with you all... if I figure oyt the mechanism!

Hasta pronto!

Hi Valentin!

This is Matthew Rouse. I noticed that you had started the discussion for this theme group. I am a part of the Plant Disease theme group. Have a nice day!

Matthew
