Linear Habitats Theme Discussion

One other example of linear habitats that isn't represented in the papers listed so far is railroad rights-of-way.  In Iowa where we have very little remnant native prairie habitat left these rights-of-way seem like they can be important.  For her master's thesis my friend Jessica Davis (formerly Jessica Skibbe) looked at butterflies in railroad rights-of-way and roadsides in Iowa as compared to block habitat and found that these linear habitats could be quite beneficial.  Other students at ISU have also done work on grass waterways/filter strips.

I have pdfs for a few examples but I can post this comment w/them attached - it keeps saying the attachments are too big even when I only try 1 paper.

Hi Jennifer--

You should be be able to upload docs of up to 1 mb here... Can you try one more time to post to this discussion link? And after Friday, you'll have access to post documents to the linear habitats folder. Ashley

Hi Jennifer. Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner. Yes, railroad ROWs are important, as are pipeline ROWs. I believe there are some interesting papers on these in the Industry Symposium books that were mentioned in lecture. Unfortunately, they aren't available online, so I'll need to scan them. I would like to see the papers you mention above, so feel free to upload them to the Linear Habitat folder under Workspace/Themes if you can't upload them here.

As for the riparian buffers, I didn't mention them in the lecture mainly because they are often not as intensively managed (more often remnants of natural habitat) as hedgerows or live fences (or ROWs) and also because I thought the hydrology group might be more apt to look into them. That said, there is certainly a lot of geographic variation in how riparian buffers are maintained, so it might be more applicable than I had originally thought. Something to consider.

Of course, we'll need to narrow our focus at some point, but best to round up all the possibilities first and then decide where to go from there...

Hi All! I had inteneded to start this Discussion Forum off with a big welcome and introduction, but I got side-tracked and now the first entry above is blank! I hope to make use of the Discussion Forum a lot over the course of our project, as I think the chat room environment can be a little rushed. And I think it is good to have a place where people can put ideas and respond to things at their leisure, especially since we have a combination of native and non-native english speakers. So though we will have weekly meetings in the chat room, please also check this forum once a day during the week if you can, to see what folks are talking about. I will do the same.

My schedule is crazy on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so those are the only two days that I may, occassionally, not respond to things immediately. Just FYI.

Before our first official meeting next week, I think it would be a great idea for everyone to introduce themselves here to the rest of the group. Just say "hi" and give us some information on your research interests generally and what program you are in, etc. And try to find and upload a picture if you haven't already done so. This will help us get to know each other.

Looking forward to it.
