Hi, welcome to the plant disease theme group!

This group has four students and two faculty members in it.  There may also be a couple more people who will join us.

Students:

Melissa Cheatham (ISU), cheatham@iastate.edu

Severo Ignacio Cardenas (CATIE), ignacio@catie.ac.cr

Matthew Rouse (KSU), mrouse@ksu.edu

Adam Sparks (KSU), asparks@ksu.edu

Faculty:

Karen Garrett (KSU/UCD), kgarrett@ksu.edu

Tom Gordon (UCD), trgordon@ucdavis.edu

1. Instead of replying to this e-mail, for the time being let’s switch over to using the discussion page on the DGS website, # .  It’s important for everyone to register on the website so that NCEAS has your contact information.  The discussion page for this theme group is at

Home > Discuss > Theme discussion > Plant Disease Theme Discussion

I’m also copying this message to that discussion page so you can have it for reference.

2. To start with, we need to find a meeting time that will work for everyone.  On our theme discussion page, please post an entry and

(a) list the times that you would be available for a weekly discussion.  Also, please

(b) tell us a little about your interests related to the plant disease and ecosystem services theme - so we can start thinking about how to link all our interests into a good synthesis paper.

You can find information about my research at http://www.ksu.edu/pdecology

We’ll need to figure out the best way to hold discussions.  One option is to hold audio conferences using skype, available free at www.skype.com.  We can also use a chat room for this theme on the dgs website at home > chat

(c) Please also note in your posting whether you could use skype for discussions

3. If you’re interested in being the student theme group leader for this theme, please send me an e-mail that describes your interest and the experience you have relevant to this project, and include your CV.

Thanks, I’m looking forward to our first discussion!  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Please post your information this week so that we can schedule our first discussion next week.

Best,

Karen

Hi. My name is Melissa Cheatham. I am attending Iowa State University (central time zone). I would be interested in helping to head up the group although my background is more with water type stuff. I am interested in being in the plant disease group because it is a little different from what I am currently working on in my research (perennial vegetation and diversity) and because I enjoyed the required reading for the theme particularly the part where the researchers obtained the treatment design from a farmer they were working with. The planting layout worked well to reduce the disease yet allowed for enough production of the glutenous rice to meet local needs.

Times when I would be free to meet are given below: (this is Central Time)

Monday - 9:00-6:00pm

Tuesday - 8:00-6:00pm

Wednesday - 8:00-6:00pm (later if needed)

Thursday - 8:00 - 6:00pm

Friday - 11:00- 5:00pm

If anyone has any questions let me know.
